Atok mula menjejakkan kaki ke SMK Jugra pada pertengahan tahun 1997, ketika kawasan itu masih sarat dengan sisa-sisa sejarah lama yang tidak pernah benar-benar hilang—Bukit Jugra berdiri senyap di kejauhan, Sungai Langat mengalir perlahan membawa cerita lama, dan kampung-kampung sekitarnya seperti Klanang, Sungai Buaya, serta Bandar masih mengekalkan rentak hidup yang sederhana tetapi akrab sesama sendiri. Di sekolah itulah Atok belajar bahawa mengajar bukan sekadar berdiri di hadapan kelas, tetapi menjadi sebahagian daripada denyut kehidupan masyarakat setempat yang sangat rapat hubungan antara guru, ibu bapa, dan komuniti. Setiap pagi, perjalanan ke sekolah melalui jalan-jalan kecil kampung memberikan rasa bahawa Jugra bukan sekadar nama tempat dalam peta sejarah, tetapi sebuah ruang hidup yang penuh dengan wajah, suara, dan cerita manusia.
Hubungan Atok dengan masyarakat tempatan berkembang secara perlahan tetapi mendalam, bermula daripada pertemuan kecil di kantin sekolah, majlis gotong-royong, hingga ke rumah-rumah pelajar yang terletak di Klanang dan Sungai Buaya. Di sana, Atok melihat sendiri bagaimana pendidikan menjadi harapan yang digenggam erat oleh keluarga yang bekerja sebagai pekebun, nelayan sungai, dan pekerja kampung yang hidup sederhana tetapi teguh nilai kekeluargaan mereka. Di Bandar pula, suasana sedikit berbeza—lebih hampir dengan arus pembangunan, namun masih mengekalkan keakraban komuniti kecil yang saling mengenali. Dalam setiap interaksi itu, Atok menyedari bahawa sekolah bukanlah sebuah institusi yang terpisah daripada masyarakat, tetapi satu jalinan halus yang mengikat masa depan anak-anak dengan sejarah dan kehidupan seharian kampung-kampung di sekitar Jugra. Pengenalan
Pada akhir abad ke-19, Jugra muncul sebagai sebuah ruang sejarah yang sarat dengan perubahan kuasa, percubaan pembangunan, serta pertembungan antara tradisi Melayu dan pentadbiran kolonial British. Perkembangannya tidak berlaku secara linear, tetapi berlapis-lapis—antara istana, ladang, jalan raya, dan fail pentadbiran yang bergerak dari satu meja pegawai ke meja yang lain. Dalam naratif ini, Jugra bukan sekadar lokasi geografi, tetapi sebuah “pusat makna” yang berubah mengikut zaman: daripada pusat istiadat diraja kepada kawasan yang bergelut mempertahankan relevansinya dalam jaringan ekonomi kolonial yang semakin tertumpu ke Klang dan Kuala Lumpur.
Antara tahun 1880-an hingga 1890-an, Jugra berdiri sebagai suatu paradoks. Di satu sisi, ia adalah pusat tradisi dan adat istiadat Melayu, tempat Sultan Abdul Samad bersemayam. Istana Jugra menjadi lokasi istiadat penting, seperti perlantikan pembesar dan upacara pengurniaan darjah kebesaran. Daerah Kuala Langat pula digambarkan sebagai kawasan pertanian, dengan usaha penanaman padi dan sagu yang mendapat perhatian istana, namun ia juga "flat and swampy" (rata dan berpaya) dan tidak terlibat dalam revolusi bijih timah yang melanda kawasan lain.
Menjelang pertengahan hingga akhir 1890-an, ketegangan ini menjadi semakin nyata. Infrastruktur utama seperti Jalan Klang–Langat tidak siap sepenuhnya, manakala perkhidmatan feri yang tidak mencukupi melemahkan hubungan antara kawasan. Lebih kritikal lagi, jaringan pengangkutan dan perdagangan mula lebih condong ke Klang, bukan Jugra. Laporan Pegawai Daerah sendiri mengakui bahawa hanya satu kapal wap kecil milik Cina beroperasi di kawasan itu, satu gambaran jelas tentang keterbatasan integrasi ekonomi Jugra dalam arus utama kolonial. Dalam erti kata lain, Jugra sedang mengalami “penyisihan senyap” daripada pusat ekonomi negeri.
Dalam keadaan infrastruktur yang rapuh itu, isu keselamatan turut mencerminkan ketidakstabilan sosial. Rompakan di bungalow Pegawai Daerah dengan kehilangan wang tunai yang besar menunjukkan bahawa Jugra masih menyimpan fungsi pentadbiran penting, tetapi tidak memiliki sistem keselamatan yang setara. Kes bunuh yang disiasat polis pula menggambarkan kehadiran sistem keadilan kolonial yang berfungsi, namun lebih bersifat reaktif daripada pencegahan. Semua ini menambah gambaran Jugra sebagai pusat pentadbiran yang masih aktif, tetapi tidak lagi dominan.
Di sebalik semua perubahan ini, Bukit Jugra kekal sebagai simbol yang paling fleksibel maknanya. Ia pernah menjadi lokasi survei, laluan jalan ke sanatorium, kawasan legenda tempatan, dan juga ruang yang ditafsir melalui lensa etnografi kolonial. Dalam satu sisi, ia dilihat sebagai aset strategik dan saintifik; dalam sisi lain, ia dikaitkan dengan kepercayaan dan cerita rakyat Melayu. Dualiti ini menjadikan Bukit Jugra bukan sekadar bukit, tetapi “panggung tafsiran” antara dua dunia pengetahuan yang berbeza.

Kemuncak sejarah Jugra tiba pada tahun 1898 dengan kemangkatan Sultan Abdul Samad di Istana Jugra. Peristiwa ini bukan sekadar kematian seorang pemerintah, tetapi penutup kepada satu era politik dan simbolik. Apabila Sultan Abdul Samad mangkat pada 6 Februari 1898, ia seperti satu noktah kepada era Jugra. Walaupun penggantinya, Raja Sulaiman, diisytiharkan di Jugra, baginda kemudiannya memindahkan kediaman rasmi ke Klang pada 1905, sekaligus menamatkan status Jugra sebagai pusat kuasa.
Laporan bertahun-tahun kemudian mendedahkan nasib Jugra yang malang. Pada tahun 1899, dilaporkan "much sickness prevails at Jugra" (banyak penyakit merebak di Jugra), suatu perubahan drastik daripada reputasinya dahulu sebagai salah satu tempat paling sihat di Selangor. Sementara Kuala Lumpur dan Klang terus membangun,Jugra layu menjadi "backwater" (kawasan terpencil dan mundur). Ia kekal sebagai sebuah monumen bisu kepada era feudal yang dilupakan arus pemodenan. Menjelang awal abad ke-20, Jugra lebih dikenang sebagai tapak sejarah—tempat di mana Sultan terakhir Selangor bersemayam dan disemadikan, serta simbol bagaimana sebuah pusat kuasa boleh berubah daripada nadi negeri kepada memori sejarah.

Keseluruhannya, sejarah Jugra memperlihatkan satu proses transformasi yang kompleks: daripada pusat istana kepada pusat pentadbiran kolonial, daripada ruang ekonomi kepada ruang simbolik. Ia mengajar bahawa kuasa bukan sahaja berpindah melalui keputusan politik, tetapi juga melalui jalan raya yang tidak siap, sungai yang kehilangan feri, dan jaringan perdagangan yang perlahan-lahan beralih arah. Dalam senyapnya perubahan itu, Jugra tetap berdiri sebagai saksi kepada pembentukan Selangor moden—sebuah negeri yang lahir daripada pertemuan antara istana, kolonialisme, dan ekonomi global.
Melihat kembali Jugra pada penghujung abad ke-19, Atok selalu terfikir bahawa sejarah tempat ini bukan sekadar kisah naik dan turun sebuah pusat pentadbiran, tetapi cerminan bagaimana kuasa, manusia, dan masa bergerak dalam arah yang tidak selalu kita sedari ketika ia sedang berlaku. Jugra pernah menjadi nadi Selangor—tempat Sultan bersemayam, tempat Residen berbincang, dan tempat keputusan negeri dibuat—namun perlahan-lahan ia ditinggalkan oleh arus pembangunan yang lebih kuat ke Klang dan Kuala Lumpur. Di situlah pelajaran paling besar Jugra: bahawa sebuah pusat boleh berubah tanpa hilang nilai, kerana yang tinggal bukan lagi fungsi, tetapi makna.
Atok juga melihat bagaimana perubahan itu bukan berlaku secara tiba-tiba, tetapi melalui perkara kecil yang sering dianggap remeh—jalan yang tidak siap, feri yang tiada, pelabuhan yang beralih, dan jaringan ekonomi yang perlahan-lahan memihak ke tempat lain. Semua itu, apabila dilihat bersama, membentuk satu cerita besar tentang peralihan kuasa dan peradaban. Namun Jugra tetap meninggalkan sesuatu yang tidak dapat diganti: warisan istiadat, tanah sejarah, dan ingatan kolektif tentang sebuah negeri yang sedang membentuk dirinya.
Akhirnya, bagi Atok, Jugra mengajar bahawa sejarah bukan sekadar apa yang kekal berdiri, tetapi juga apa yang pernah penting sebelum ia perlahan-lahan menjadi sunyi. Dan dalam kesunyian itulah, kita sering menemui makna yang paling jujur tentang siapa kita, dari mana kita datang, dan bagaimana sebuah tempat kecil seperti Jugra boleh membawa beban sejarah yang begitu besar dalam perjalanan sebuah negeri.
